Description
Yaws is a neglected tropical disease that is one of very few infections that are targeted by the WHO. It is a bacterial infection causing lesions in the skin, and can be treated by a single oral dose of azithromycin. However, the presence of an asymptomatic reservoir, cross-reactivity of serological tests with syphilis and low investment all present challenges for eradication. To date, there are 76 previously-endemic countries that are of unknown yaws status. We use a household model of infection to explore different intervention strategies and investigate potential sampling strategies that could be used to certify a country's elimination status.
